May 14, 2021 by

Ahdoot Wolfson is investigating reports that Herff Jones, a company known for selling graduation caps, gowns, and rings, has experienced a data breach that compromised customers’ sensitive debit and credit card information.

Students are reporting that their sensitive payment card information has been exposed as a result of the data breach and that criminals are already making unauthorized and fraudulent charges using the stolen card information. Impacted individuals reportedly consist of those who purchased graduation rings, or purchased or rented graduation caps and gowns from Herff Jones. A list of the schools reportedly impacted to date includes:

  • Purdue University
  • University of Delaware
  • University of Houston
  • University of Illinois
  • George Washington University
  • Towson University

Herff Jones’s failure to protect students’ and their parents’ sensitive payment card information may have violated state consumer protection and privacy laws.
