Penn Medicine Improper Bill Up-Coding and Patient Overcharging – Class Action Investigation

Ahdoot & Wolfson is investigating a potential class action lawsuit against the University of Pennsylvania Health System (also known as Penn Medicine) following reports that it may be overcharging patients for certain medical consultations and procedures.

Specifically, we have become aware of reports of patients who have gone to Penn Medicine for a specific type of appointment, and then receive medical bills from Penn Medicine containing charges for consultations that were not anticipated by the patient to be included in the appointment. For example, some patients report that Penn Medicine may be improperly up-coding for appointments–such as annual physicals, which are typically deemed preventive medicine–and instead of having a no charge for the annual physical, patients see additional charges above and beyond what the patient anticipated.

We are investigating whether this is part of maximizing the so-called “revenue cycle management” of patients in the hospital system, including. We are also investigating whether this alleged conduct may have caused third-party payors to overpay for care.

If you received a bill for healthcare at Penn Medicine which had unexpected charges on it, please contact us to discuss our investigation.
