Blue Shield of California Data Disclosure – Class Action Investigation
Ahdoot Wolfson is investigating a data disclosure class action lawsuit against Blue Shield of California following reports that it impermissibly disclosed patient website activity with Google’s advertising arm, Google Ads.
Blue Shield recently disclosed that Google Analytics was installed on the Blue Shield website to track how visitors used certain Blue Shield websites. Per Blue Shield’s disclosure notice, on February 11, 2025, Blue Shield learned that Google Analytics was configured in a way that permitted member data to be shared with Google Ads for almost three years, between April 2021 and January 2024. Due to this disclosure, sensitive information about website usage may have been disclosed, including:
- names;
- insurance plan name, type, and group number;
- city and zip code;
- gender;
- family size;
- Blue Shield assigned identifiers for members’ online accounts;
- medical claim service dates and service providers;
- patient financial responsibility;
- information input into the website’s “Find a Doctor” feature, including search criteria and results (location, plan name and type, provider name and type)
Blue Shield of California’s failure to prevent the disclosure, the disclosure itself, and its failure to timely notify victims of the disclosure may violate state and federal laws.
